I first met Jill Lenz in May 2004 after she answered an ad to participate in a "mysterious art" project that eventually became PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment). Even though she worked full time in public relations, was a busy Mom to 5 year old Max and lived over an hour away in the depths of New Jersey, she still managed to make it out regularly to the "Bridge for Dance" studio in New York on Monday nights to rehearse with us.

Her enthusiasm and vivacious personality was infectious. She laughed a lot and always had wonderful ideas to contribute to the group.

We all danced together on July 17th 2004, the first date that PURE was introduced to the public. At this point, Jill had been experiencing strange dizzy spells for a few weeks, although she did not know the cause of it. Amazingly, she managed to complete the entire procession throughout lower Manhattan. (View photo gallery from July 17th 2004.)

A few days later, Jill was hospitalized. The doctors discovered a tumor in her brain located right next to the area governing motor skills and balance.

We visited her in hospital as well as sent her emails and cards. We wanted to let her know how much we cared about her, so we made Jill a healing book filled with our artwork and poems so she could keep our positive messages and thoughts close when she was healing.

Determined not to let cancer interfere with her wedding plans, Jill went ahead and married the love of her life, Alex Petrunia on October 9th 2004. The dancers and musicians were excited to be there to help bless their union along with close friends and family.

Throughout her entire radiation treatment Jill continued to dance. She loved to sweat because it made her feel she was getting rid of all the chemical toxins left over from chemotherapy. She often sent us updates via email so we could keep track of her progress.

By February 2005, a second tumor was discovered. This time it was inside her brain stem. It was very tough and did not respond at all to radiation treatment.
Her condition weakened considerably.

When she could no longer stand, she continued to practice shoulder shimmies sitting in bed. When she eventually became too weak to sit, she lay still and listened to Middle Eastern music. The nurses in the hospital all knew which CDs to play while they administered chemotherapy.

There isn't an easy way to say good bye to someone that seems far too young to die. Personally, I am glad that I was not sitting at home on the day she passed away but instead, was actively engaged in the same activity that she knew us through, which is dance and music. I can't speak for everyone, however, I felt by performing on Saturday September 24th, it was the best way we could say "Goodbye" to her. The energy on stage was incredible, not only because it was also the first time we were dancing together with other PURE branches from around the country as one, but also because there were around 10,000 peace supporters in the audience sharing the experience.

Now that Jill was free of her physical body, she was able to take her place in our circle and join us for one last time as we performed at the Operation Ceasefire concert.

Jill, knowing you has a been a true gift to all of us. You have taught us how important it is to value each day, to live life to it's fullest and not take anything for granted. Your spirit will always be remembered. Thank you for gracing us with your light.
