PURE visits sites around Manhattan as part of the September Concert third annual city-wide music fête in celebration of our universal humanity

The procession begins at 2:00pm in Battery Park and will last until approximately 4:30p.m. Come meet us at the beginning of our route or try to find us along the way as we visit the following sites:

1. 2:00pm: Meet at the East Coast Memorial in Battery Park near Castle Clinton and the ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
2. Go to the “Sphere” sculpture in Battery Park next to Hope Garden
3. Travel up Broadway to Liberty Square at Liberty Street and Trinity Place, process though the square and past the World Trade Center site
4. Take the 4/5 train from Fulton Street to Grand Central Station
5. Travel along 42nd Street and up 1st Avenue past the United Nations
6. 3:00pm: Cross 1st Avenue to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza (47th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues)
7. Walk to Central Park, enter at the 59th Street & 6th Avenue entrance at the bottom of the park
8. 4:00pm: Perform at the September Concert stage at the South end of the Mall (at 66th Street, above the 65th Street Transverse)
9. Continue North through the Mall to Bethesda Fountain, just south of the Lake, in the middle of the park at 72nd Street

Our Voices, Our World: An Evening Celebrating the UN International Day of Peace organized by We, The World

PURE performs at the "No Excuse" Concert, a kick-off event to foster awareness and involve the public in achieving the following United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop a global partnership for development

The "No Excuse" concert is held at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, 47th St, bet 1st and 2nd Ave, Free to the public. Concert lasts from 12pm-8pm.

Saturday January 8th 5-7pm: ABC Carpet and Home
PURE performs with guests, Adore and Sonali Shroff for a project affiliated with the V-Day Project to raise money to end violence against women, ie. genital mutilation in Africa. It will be in the Love Your Tree area on the 2nd floor, which was designed for women -- and men -- to go after seeing Ensler's new Broadway play "The Good Body" which addresses why women of all cultures and backgrounds - whether undergoing Botox injections or living beneath burkhas - feel compelled to change the way they look in order to fit in, to be accepted, to be "good." ALL PURE branches will be simultaneously taking to the streets in their own local areas, to spread peace and healing. This will coincide with the anniversary of when PURE first went public in 2004.

What will this workshop cover?
The workshop will introduce you to the collaboration and choreography of PURE.  We'll start by exploring exercises that focus on movement meditation, breathing, and improvisation.  Then we'll learn a segment of the original PURE choreography, applying it in different group formations so we can dance together.  PURE uses movements that are inspired by ancient Sacred Circle dances, Tribal and Cabaret bellydance, Flamenco, Indian dance, Folk dance, Yoga and Qi Gong Meditation.

Requirements:
PURE is open to all dancers who are willing to try something different and work as a team. It was first designed for bellydancers who already have a foundation in basic technique, but dancers with training from other disciplines are welcomed and encouraged.  Musicians who have an understanding of working with dancers are also encouraged to become involved with PURE but this will be a dance workshop.  There are no limits on age, size, shape, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic class or sexual orientation except for a desire to offer your dance for the healing and growth to the community.

It was first designed for bellydancers who already have a foundation in basic technique, but dancers with training from other disciplines are welcomed and encouraged.  Musicians who have an understanding of working with dancers are also encouraged to become involved with PURE but this will be a dance workshop.  There are no limits on age, size, shape, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic class or sexual orientation except for a desire to offer your dance for the healing and growth to the community.

New Orleans PURE Workshop

Saturday, July 1st from 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm

***PURE Dance workshop  (includes a half hour break)***

Cammi Vance (Darshan) will teach the fundamental choreography for PURE. No specific dance experience is required. Class is open to all levels of movement experience.
This is the choreography that will be used for future public performances around New Orleans.

Cost: $65 per person, $60 if registered by June 24th.

***Drumming Workshop ***

Cammi Vance (Darshan) will teach the rhythms specific to PURE dance and go over transitions and cueing. Drummers are encouraged to attend the last half hour of the PURE dance workshop to play!
Cost: $15 per person, $12 if registered by June 24th.

Drum workshop + PURE dance workshop (below) = $75 per person, $68 if registered by June 24th.

We might put together a guerilla performance of sorts after the workshop and descend on the city -- it just depends on how the day develops.

Processions in 10 US cities on the anniversary weekend of PURE's first public event in 2004.

A community group known as PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) will process through the streets of Central Park on Saturday July 15th as part of an event that involves simultaneous performances in 10 US cities including: Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Traverse City, MI; Orlando,
San Francisco, Washington DC, and New England.

PURE was founded in New York two years ago by a group of dancers and musicians committed to promoting peace by publicly presenting their art outside of traditional performance venues. The group is a mix of professional and amateur performers of all ages, races, sizes, and levels who have come together with the common goal of inspiring peace through dance and music.

On Saturday, July 15th, from 12.00-1.30p.m, the PURE NYC will traverse Central Park stopping along the way to enjoy, commune with, and pay tribute to Nature. We hope to encourage onlookers to contribute environmental organizations, so that green spaces can be enjoyed by all for many generations to come.

Starting at Bethesda Fountain in Central Park and ending at Cherry Hill for a picnic celebration, the event will feature a procession of dancing and drumming, punctuated with site-specific choreographies.

12.00pm: The procession starts at Bethesda Fountain. Then we will head east toward the Loeb Boathouse and will turn right and go through a tunnel and stay on the left pathway to travel toward the Alice in Wonderland Statue north of the Conservatory Water. Then we will head south toward the Shakespeare Statue near the Literary Walk and travel up the Mall toward the Naumberg Bandshell for a dance and music jam! 1.30pm: Join PURE NYC for a picnic celebration at Cherry Hill, under the cool shade of trees overlooking the lake next to Bethesda Terrace.

3.00-6.00pm: Listen to free soul music at Summerstage located at Rumsey Playfield. Artists include; The Family Stand; Black Merda; and Sharrif Simmons. www.summerstage.org

PURE Houston

PURE Houston Will Begin Performing at Noon on the Kemah Boardwalk

Directions to Kemah: From I-45, take NASA Rd. 1 east to Texas 146; south on TX 146 to Kemah.

Stroll along the boardwalk and watch the boats ply the waters of Galveston Bay. The boardwalk features several themed restaurants, retail and specialty shops, a hotel, a water garden, dancing fountains, and a specialty aquarium restaurant featuring a 50,000 gallon tank of tropical fish. Amusement rides include a 65-ft. Ferris wheel, a carousel, and a gas-powered train that travels throughout the entire boardwalk for a scenic tour of the complex.

Then PURE Will Begin Performing around 1:30 pm at The Strand

Directions to Galveston:
Take I-45 South. Galveston is about 45 miles south of Houston. League City will be about half way from Houston to Galveston . As you approach Galveston you will cross from the mainland to the island over a large bridge. After the bridge you will be in Galveston , and I-45 turns in to Broadway Street. 

Directions to The Strand:
Broadway is the main road down Galveston and essentially cuts the island in half. Perpendicular to this street are numbered streets. Continue down Broadway until 23rd Street then take a left onto 23rd (there will be a sign on the stop light that says " The Strand "). 5 blocks down you will be in The National Historic Strand District . 8 blocks down you will see "The Strand" street. 

Parking is available along the streets, and there are numerous paid parking lots throughout the District.

Bright and beautiful Kim Sonsky has been suffering for the last few months from constant, extreme pain caused by a mysterious degeneration of her spine. It is hard even to speak; her neck, arms and hands feel very heavy. She cannot keep her head up and has difficulty holding a pen. Despite the pain, she has been forced to return to part-time work because her money ran out and her doctor bills are fast accumulating.  We heartily thank you on Kim's behalf for all donations; we miss her infectious laugh and her ever-present, radiant smile.
